Exploring Porcelain Casting Slip
I have often dabbled in porcelain. I enjoy its purity, its smoothness, its elasticity when plyable although anyone who’s worked with it knows its not without its challenges!
Any time I begin a new project I work out what I want to achieve, what direction I want to go in. With this project I wanted to explore the translucency whilst also working with simple shapes. For this project I chose spheres and eggs, always shapes I have enjoyed.
So I made my plaster molds and set about the slip casting.
With my egg shapes I wanted to get them as thin a possible, (the ones above are about 1mm) as I wanted to think about light shades for this particular shape. I tried some first with a Turquoise crackle glaze to refract the light, but then with a heavier turquiose glaze which separated beautifully over the holes.
